10 things you need to know this Thursday morning February 27, 2020

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:


1. The Supreme Court has struck out the appeal filed by the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the review of the Bayelsa Governorship election. The Court in its ruling said the appeal lacked merit and as a result, struck out. Justice Amina Augie who read the judgment pointed out that the apex court’s decisions were final. The judge said the applicants failed to point out errors in the earlier judgment, insisting that the judgment was final for all ages, saying that no court can fault or reverse it. It also slammed N60m fine against the lawyers of the APC, Afe Babalola and Wale Olanipekun.

2. Relatively, The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wednesday raised the alarm, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of currently mounting pressure on the Supreme Court to restrain itself from reversing the flawed judgment on the Imo State Governorship election. It also alleged that this clandestine moves came despite obvious mistakes in the controversial judgment, which is allegedly threatening the stability of the nation.


3. The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos State has said its national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is qualified to be the president of Nigeria in 2023. Giving reasons, the party said Tinubu’s commitment, resourcefulness and pedigree put him in good stead to lead Nigeria. The newly-elected Secretary of State Party, Lanre Ogunyemi said this during a press briefing in Lagos to unveil newly elected executives.

4. Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, on Wednesday, led a procession against insecurity in Nigeria. The march was organised by the diocese to mourn Nigerians killed by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists, bandits and kidnappers. Hundreds of Christian and Muslim faithful in Sokoto walked from Abdullahi Fodio Road through the Central Market road to Ahmadu Bello Way. In his remarks, Kukah explained that the procession was to mourn and pray for Nigerians whose lives were cut short by outlaws.

5. A Corporal of the Nigerian Army serving at the Theatre Command, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Army Super Camp 15, Borno State, has killed four of his colleagues. He also injured two others before committing suicide. The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sagir Musa, disclosed this in a statement, adding that the incident took place on Wednesday morning. Musa added that the wounded personnel are currently in a stable condition at the Nigerian army hospital in Maiduguri.


6. The House of Representatives has directed the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to publish the names and photos of sex traffickers. This followed a unanimous adoption of a motion moved by Rep. Rimamnde Kwewum (PDP-Taraba) and seven others.

7. The Secretary-General of apex Igbo socio-political organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Barr Uche Okwukwu, on Wednesday reacted to the comment by Nasir El-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State on the 2023 presidency, saying that the Kaduna State Governor was right in his position on zoning of the presidency to the South. He insisted that the Southeast and South-South should be allowed to produce the country’s next president.

8. The Chief of Army staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, on Wednesday said the army will soon embark on recruitment of Nigerian youths into the force to enable it fight insurgency in the north-east of the country. Buratai, who was represented by Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Akpan, the Director Directorate of Army Recruitment, Resettlement and Reserve, DARRR, made this known during a courtesy visit to the Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief David Umahi at the exco-chambers Government House, Abakaliki.


9. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested former Kano House of Assembly speaker, Isyaku Ali Danja. Danja was arrested by the anti-graft agency for alleged abuse of office and misappropriation of fund meant for constituency projects. The ex-Speaker’s arrest followed a petition filed against him by the State Government alleging that funds meant for payment of tax liabilities to Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) were diverted and misappropriated to the tune of over N1.5 billion.

10. A community leader, Mr. Wale Edun, has been reportedly killed by a tipper driver at Iyana-Iyesi area of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government of Ogun State. The incident, on Tuesday, led to a mob action as irate youths went after the driver, who took to his heels immediately he realized he had crushed Edun to death. However, his two assistants were nabbed and one of them was reportedly burnt beyond recognition inside the lorry.
